Earth Week Celebrations | April 18th-22nd

This year we have an exciting lineup of events and activities to celebrate Earth Week which starts on Monday, April 18th.  Activities range from those taking place in school to events after school, offering a variety of ways for students and families to get involved. Please see below for the calendar of events and further details.

Monday, April 18th:  Earth Week kicks off with a virtual presentation by Soundwaters.

Tuesday, April 19th:  Classroom Clean-up- students will do their own spring cleaning as they go through their desks and recycle dated papers and classroom supplies.

Wednesday, April 20th:  Waste LESS Wednesday- students are invited to find ways to limit their waste at lunch. Think: pack a lunch, utlitize re-usable containers, utensils and water bottles.  Every student that shows they’ve “wasted” less will receive entry into a raffle for a Hindley Happening Fast Pass!

Thursday, April 21st:  Hindley unites to celebrate the community and our planet on Thursday evening with a variety of after school activities.

  • Hindley Creations Art Show “Love the Earth”. The art show will take place 4pm to 6pm and will display original student artwork inspired by loving and caring for the Earth.  Mrs. Snowden and Mrs. Christie will be awarding ribbons and selecting the top creation per grade to be displayed at the Darien Library. Refreshments will be served!  For those interested in submitting artwork, click here for further submission details. (Link to the Creations Art Show flyer).
  • Hindley Book Swap. Did you know that the vast majority of books end up landfilled each year? The binding glue used in books is a contaminant that makes books difficult to recycle. Donating books is not only is a great way to extend their life but also pass on the joy to other readers. Beginning Tuesday, April 5th through Friday, April 8th, we will be collecting used children’s books by the front entrance.  Whether it’s those leveled readers or early chapter books your kids have outgrown, or a favorite joke book that isn’t a favorite anymore, we welcome all children’s books in good condition.  Everyone is then invited to stop by anytime Thursday from 4pm to 6pm to take home a free book or two! All remaining books will be donated.
  • Hindley Beautification. Hindley families are invited to join in making Hindley a bit more beautiful from 4pm-6pm by weeding and planting bulbs. If you can’t make it, but would like to support the effort please consider helping with a donation towards supplies.  All families interested in participating should sign up here.

Friday, April 22nd: Calling all Bikers and Walkers! Kids are encouraged to wear green and walk or bike to school as Hindley reduces its carbon footprint for the day. We will have volunteers by both the Post Road and Pasture gates to check students in. The grade with the highest percentage of walkers will earn an extra recess!
